Located near Ethiopia’s Dabbahu Volcano in the Afar Depression, the museum sits within an active tectonic landscape shaped by ground fissures. It is wedged between two massive rock faces, filling a gap created by the earth’s movement. Inside, a simple box-like form balances between solid rock and open space. Visitors move through, touching the rock’s surface and looking down through vertical openings into the abyss. The design makes the museum a direct encounter with nature’s scale and force.
