The design re-evolves Antoni Gaudí's iconic 1904 hexagonal pavement that is part of the MoMA collection. Manufactured by the same company, this new "Sand" pavement is digitally designed but has the same shape and size as Gaudí's. Its key difference is the random placement of pieces, avoiding a repetitive pattern, and its sinuous, sand-like texture. Crucially, Sand is a living pavement that changes with sunlight and uses a photocatalytic additive to decompose polluting oxides (NOx and SOx), reducing air pollution—one hectare paved can eliminate pollution from 3,500 vehicles in a year.
