We renovated a 45-year-old Tokyo apartment centered on a massive, cross-shaped concrete beam. Previously hidden by partitions, we exposed this structural "landscape" to define the living space. By aligning walls and finishes with the beam’s height, we created a seamless flow of air and light from the nearby river. The layout features four distinct zones under the beams, utilizing materials like rattan and lauan. Sliding doors allow for flexible private rooms as the family grows. This design reinterprets the beam’s scale, fostering an intimate lifestyle embraced by the building’s history.
