To effect this two-floor apartment renovation, in a building with a dense structural grid, we had to bisect the unit with a stair. So we turned the stair wall into a singular sculptural moment, using a series of powder-coated steel tubes, painted gold outside and white inside, then laser cut, producing the illusion of metal that twists as you walk up, down, or around the stair. Because it is not a solid partition, the stair wall does not block the light or the view of Central Park; it is both beautiful to look at and beautiful to look through.
