Tasked to create a sculptural experience of space with orthogonal efficiency, the design explores the dissection and manipulation of a rectangular mass in plan and section. To preserve plan efficiencies and maintain a level of dynamism, our team applied the notion of the “Dutch Angle” used in film, which rotates the camera axis to create an experience filled with drama and tension. Rotated and battered walls, deep knife edge overhangs, chamfered ceilings, and plays of light and shadow carry the angular, sculptural language of the Dutch Angle throughout the design.
