The abandoned boiler station at Xi'an Shiyou University, which was constructed in 1997 and had been out of use since 2014 due to changes in the city's heating system, was transformed into a mixed-use art community in 2022. The former large boiler room was converted into an art exhibition gallery, and smaller rooms now serve as commercial spaces to fund the art events. This repurposing preserves the building's original structure, preventing it from being divided into low-cost co-working spaces, a fate that befalls many urban industrial heritage sites in China.
