Creating destinations, richness of experience and meeting places has been central at Canal City in Kristiansand. The site has been a key area for harbor activity since the 1920s. By adding a 12 meter wide and 335 meter long canal through the area, Kristiansand not only gained a new neighborhood with 650 apartments and recreational spaces accessible for all, they gained a new attraction for the whole city. The island made it possible to give significantly more water contact to the apartments, as well as linking the hierarchy of meeting places to either the sea, the forest or the channel.
